Vessel Command Leader Job Description

The Vessel Command Leader is responsible for the overall command of the vessel and all operations that take place on board. This includes managing the ship and crew to ensure navigation, repair & maintenance activities, and company goals are achieved in an efficient and safe manner.

  • Executes safety-, security-, health- and environmental policies on board
  • Acts as Ship Security Officer when qualified
  • Ensures compliance with international legislation, flag state requirements, industry standards, and Company contracts
  • Issues orders and instructions in a clear and simple manner
  • Verifies specified requirements are observed and the functionality of Management of Change is maintained
  • Reviews the safety management system and reports deficiencies to shore-based management

The Vessel Command Leader also represents the Company, vessel owner, and/or charterer. They complete necessary reports, maintain the vessel's administration, and ensure the availability of required and valid certificates on board.

  • Coordinates and delegates activities on board to ensure completion according to the work scheme with minimal loss of time
  • Promotes a positive safety culture onboard by leading by example and wearing appropriate PPE
  • Responsible for medical care on board and stands watches as officer of the watch
  • Maintains discipline, order, neatness, hygiene, and adequate living conditions throughout the vessel

The ideal candidate will have 18+ months experience in the rank of Master, hold all STCW licenses and certificates required for this position, be proficient in English, and able to undertake tasks, duties, and responsibilities as a Master.
