Position Overview

The Ratings Associate will collaborate with senior analysts in the assignment and oversight of credit ratings, conducting research, drafting reports, and engaging in various related tasks. This role involves assessing credit risk by synthesizing inputs from both internal and external sources. The Ratings Associate will conduct credit evaluations for assigned entities, transactions, or reviews, and is expected to take part in rating committee discussions while interacting with issuers and other market participants alongside lead analysts.

The Ratings Associate position is crucial to Moody's dedication to accuracy in ratings, comprehensive research, and market engagement. Typically, this role will concentrate on a specific rating group, with opportunities for cross-training and involvement in other rating sectors.

Key Responsibilities

Portfolio Management & Credit Quality
Collaborating with lead analysts to perform daily credit assessments related to ratings, research, presentations, and investor engagement. Specific analytical tasks may include:

  • Evaluating financial spreadsheets and charts, analyzing data and financial statements, creating and updating financial forecasts, and composing analytical commentary in line with Moody's methodologies.
  • Assisting with proprietary models and new financial projections as necessary, identifying data trends, and applying analytical skills to draw sound credit conclusions.
  • Gaining a foundational understanding of credit principles through reviewing transaction documentation, cash flow analysis, or loss allocation rules.
  • Conducting analytical tasks related to portfolio evaluations and other credit initiatives.
  • Acquiring knowledge of Moody's methodologies and best practices in credit ratings, applying these under the guidance of lead analysts.
  • Collaborating with lead analysts to draft initial versions of rating committee memos.
  • Developing the ability to recognize and analyze key factors influencing issuer credit ratings, interpreting financial data and other credit inputs from various sources.
  • Monitoring credit quality and trends within issuers and industries by tracking market developments and relevant news, analyzing issuer reports, and engaging directly with issuers for clarification and information.
  • Participating in rating committee meetings, contributing analysis and insights as appropriate, and preparing credit estimates used to evaluate elements of credit risk in rated transactions.

Research, Investor Engagement & Market Interaction

  • Contributing to the initial drafts of essential research documents (such as credit opinions, issuer and sector comments, press releases, pre-sale, and new issue reports) in partnership with lead analysts.
  • Participating in research strategy development, including idea generation and preliminary drafting, while adhering to Moody's research standards.
  • Attending investor briefings and issuer meetings as required, assisting in the preparation of presentation materials, and being ready to engage in discussions.
  • Building constructive relationships with issuers, demonstrating initiative to understand their business, and proactively addressing issuer inquiries.

Credit Administration

  • Utilizing relevant ratings and research systems and software specific to the rating group.
  • Exhibiting a solid understanding of Moody's processes, documentation standards, and best practices, while complying with all applicable laws and policies.

Coaching & Guidance

  • Providing guidance in delegating tasks to the data processing team.
  • Effectively managing workload to ensure timely completion of tasks, seeking managerial guidance when necessary to prioritize work.
  • Offering constructive feedback to management regarding the quality and accuracy of work produced by the data processing team.

Risk Identification and Escalation

  • Ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, completing mandatory training promptly.
  • Being aware of Moody's risk management strategies.
  • Enhancing awareness of cyber risks and avoiding vulnerabilities.
  • Maintaining a high standard of work quality, free from errors.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree (e.g., Bachelor's Degree or equivalent) with strong academic performance.
  • Some relevant experience (including internships) is preferred.
  • Exceptional verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Proactive and capable of working effectively in a collaborative team setting.
  • Strong organizational skills, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Some familiarity with fixed income markets and/or credit knowledge is preferred.

Additional Experience / Qualifications (specific)

As applicable:

  • Accounting knowledge with a focus on financial analysis is preferred.
  • Python and SQL skills are preferred for certain groups.
  • Experience in economic research or relevant credit research is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of macroeconomic principles and financial/statistical research capabilities.

Education (Specific)

  • Finance and accounting background is preferred for certain groups.
  • Strong academic background in Economics or International Relations; Finance, International Business, and/or Public Administration is preferred for others.
  • Graduate degree or equivalent is preferred for specific roles.
