Job Description

The Gabis Arboretum is seeking a skilled and self-motivated individual to serve as the Seasonal Lead Gardener. This position involves maintaining the arboretum's plant collections and overseeing volunteer efforts in the gardens.

  • Maintains gardens, trails, roads, paths, turf, and other outdoor areas of the property.
  • Trims and edges around walkways, flower beds, and walls.
  • Maintains garden beds by watering, mulching, deadheading, and removing debris, litter, weeds, etc.
  • Assists in maintaining the arboretum's large plant collections: conifers, oaks, roses, and native plants.
  • Prunes shrubs and trees to shape.
  • Plants grasses, flowers, trees, and shrubs.
  • Supervises gardening volunteers while fostering positive relationships and encouraging volunteer engagement in the gardens.
  • Assists in updating plant collections through our Botanical Garden Database software.
  • Sharpens tools such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shears.
  • Performs custodial functions of Gabis facilities as needed.
  • Performs event set-up, break down, and assists event and facility rental staff as needed.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • A minimum of 1 year of related experience in garden care, pruning, and weed identification.
  • Knowledge of tree and plant care and identification throughout the various seasons.
  • Knowledge and identification of native plants and invasive species.
Benefits

This is a temporary position with an hourly pay rate of $13/hour. The duration is from March 15th to October 31st, with a minimum of 20 hours per week.

This role requires a high school diploma or equivalent. It also involves working outdoors in all weather conditions, making it essential to be physically fit and able to adapt to changing environments.
