The role of a Laboratory Support Specialist is crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of our science facilities. This position plays a vital part in supporting the Senior School Science Faculty, creating an environment that is conducive to learning and discovery.

About the Role
  • Assist teachers in practical sessions, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Maintain inventory and ensure that all equipment and resources are properly stored and organised.
  • Uphold health and safety standards in the laboratories, adhering to established protocols and procedures.
Main Responsibilities
  1. Lesson Preparation & Support
    1. Prepare and set up apparatus, chemicals, biological materials, and other teaching resources for lessons.
    2. Assist in organising and preparing materials and standard solutions for lessons in advance, streamlining workflow.
    3. Maintain well-organised, tidy, and properly equipped laboratories, ensuring they are free from hazards and conducive to learning.
    4. Support teachers during practical lessons as requested, providing assistance and guidance when needed.
    5. Ensure essential classroom materials are available and replenished, promoting a productive and efficient learning environment.
    6. Intervene if unsafe or wasteful practices occur during lessons, reinforcing lab safety rules and best practices.
  2. Equipment & Inventory Management
    1. Monitor, maintain, and repair laboratory equipment where possible, reporting any faults to the relevant authorities.
    2. Regularly update and manage stock levels of chemicals, glassware, and other consumables, using tools like Lab Logger to track usage and ordering.
    3. Assist with end-of-year inventory checks and ordering of necessary materials, ensuring that all equipment and resources are up-to-date and functional.
    4. Oversee the safe storage and disposal of laboratory waste, including biological and chemical residues, adhering to established protocols and procedures.
    5. Provide advice on the purchase of new or replacement equipment, ensuring that all purchases align with our goals and objectives.
  3. Health, Safety & Compliance
    1. Adhere to CLEAPSS, IGCSE, and IBO health and safety guidelines, ensuring that all protocols and procedures are followed.
    2. Properly handle, store, and dispose of chemicals and other hazardous materials, prioritising safety and minimising risk.
    3. Maintain clean, organised, and compliant storage areas, ensuring that all equipment and resources are easily accessible and properly secured.
