Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Automotive Mechanic to join our team at Alexander County, NC. As a key member of our Public Works/Facilities department, you will be responsible for performing a range of skilled mechanical work to maintain and repair automotive vehicles and heavy equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Diagnose and Repair Complex Mechanical Issues: Utilize your expertise to diagnose and repair highly complex mechanical problems, ensuring that all work is completed to the highest standards of safety and quality.
  • Perform Skilled Mechanical Repairs: Conduct a variety of skilled mechanical repairs on vehicles, engines, generators, and heavy equipment, including tune-ups, oil changes, brake repairs, and more.
  • Coordinate Fleet Maintenance: Coordinate and perform regular maintenance on the County's fleet of vehicles, including checks on lights, tires, oil, brakes, and suspension.
  • Operate Equipment and Tools: Operate a range of equipment and tools, including jacks, refrigerant recovery machines, vehicle lifts, tire changers, and air compressors.
  • Conduct Inventory and Replenish Supplies: Conduct inventory and replenish materials and supplies as needed.
  • Test Electrical Systems: Test electrical systems to ensure proper functioning.
  • Perform North Carolina Vehicle Inspections: Perform North Carolina Vehicle Inspections to ensure compliance with state regulations.
  • Perform General Mechanical Work: Perform general mechanical work as needed and acquire estimates for outside work.
Qualifications:
  • Thorough Knowledge of Automotive Repair: Possess thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and parts used in the repair of automotive cars, trucks, and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of Engine Operation and Repair: Have thorough knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair.
  • Knowledge of Electrical and Hydraulic Systems: Possess knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, vacuum, and brake systems.
  • Considerable Knowledge of Occupational Hazards: Have considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and related safety precautions.
  • Skill in Tool Operation: Possess skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
  • Ability to Diagnose Mechanical Problems: Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and detect worn or broken parts.
  • Ability to Read Service Manuals: Ability to read and understand service manuals and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to Operate Vehicles Safely: Ability to operate vehicles safely.
  • Ability to Follow Instructions: Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Ability to Establish Relationships: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Diploma: Graduation from high school supplemented by coursework in mechanical trade skills and journeyman-level mechanic experience repairing automotive equipment.
  • Valid Driver's License: Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
  • NC Department of Motor Vehicles License: Obtain and hold a NC Department of Motor Vehicles license for performing NC State Vehicle Inspections.
