**Job Title:** Campus Safety Leader

This position plays a vital role in maintaining a secure and safe environment on campus. A key aspect of the job is to lead by example, demonstrating exceptional leadership skills, law enforcement expertise, and strong communication abilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily operations, ensuring effective management of shift personnel, training programs, and patrol activities;
  • Direct traffic, control crowds, and manage security facilities with precision;
  • Supervise officers in the absence of senior command staff, providing guidance and support as needed;
  • Deliver comprehensive training sessions to subordinates, emphasizing efficient task completion and adherence to departmental policies;
  • Translate and disseminate policies, procedures, and directives from governing authorities to ensure seamless implementation;
  • Review and analyze administrative reports from team members, making recommendations for awards, disciplinary actions, investigations, records, and written correspondence;
  • Manage vehicle usage, ensuring official purposes are met;
  • Conduct regular inspections of security personnel, assigning them to critical areas, issuing equipment, and maintaining accountability;
  • Stay informed about police service procedures, techniques, and equipment developments; suggest improvements as necessary;
  • Respond promptly to emergencies, serve as liaison with external agencies, and represent the university in meetings with law enforcement organizations, community groups, and other stakeholders;

Requirements:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required;
  • At least five years of experience in law enforcement or a related field, including two years in a supervisory role or completion of an accredited college program in criminal justice or a related field;
  • Candidates must pass a written exam and complete an assessment phase during the hiring process;
  • Candidates without formal supervisory training will be required to participate in a First-Line Supervisory Course offered by a reputable organization;

Core Competencies:

  • Proficiency in criminal law, including elements of offenses, rules of evidence, arrest procedures, search and seizure methods, and maintenance of public order;
  • Knowledge of current departmental, municipal, and governmental policies affecting security and investigative activities;
  • Proficient use of personal computers, Microsoft Office applications, and presentation software;
  • Skilled in the use of firearms and standard police equipment, with authorization to carry a firearm in the District of Columbia;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to read technical materials, write clear reports, and express complex ideas effectively;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, faculty, staff, and community members;
  • Ability to participate in crime investigations, present evidence in court, and remain composed under pressure;
  • Flexibility to work varied schedules, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, with assigned days off;
  • Capacity to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, students, and the broader community;
