The Company

ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, committed to leading the way in steel production with a focus on safety, sustainability, quality, and leadership. The AML project is unique to ArcelorMittal's mining portfolio in that this was the first greenfield mine the company operated.


ArcelorMittal mine, Mount Gangra, is considered one the most beautiful mining environments in the world. It consists of a massive deposit of good-quality iron ore and is situated near the town of Yekepa. Iron ore is then transported to nearby Tokadeh, also in the Nimba mountain range. From Tokadeh the ore is transported by rail to Buchanan for eventual shipment out of Liberia.


ArcelorMittal currently undergoing a massive Phase II expansion project which is set to be a game changer. The project, with a capacity of 15 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, is making steady progress and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. The project consists of a state-of-the-art concentrator plant along with augmentation of the existing rail and port infrastructure to support the production and shipping of concentrated ore. The project will also have a positive impact on the local economy, with significant infrastructure upgrades, including road development, being taken up as part of the project.

The Role

The Track Geometry Specialist ensures the optimal alignment, level, and condition of railway tracks on the AML iron ore line, which features a mix of steel and wooden sleepers due to ongoing remediation. The role involves conducting inspections, measuring track geometry, and analyzing data to ensure safe rail operations. The specialist works with maintenance teams, recommending repairs, realignment, and sleeper replacement, reporting to the Rail Maintenance Manager.


The Key Responsibilities

Track Geometry Inspections:

  • Conduct regular and detailed inspections of the track geometry to ensure proper alignment, gauge, cross-level, and curvature compliance, focusing on the areas with mixed sleeper types.
  • Complete 100% of scheduled inspections within the set timeframes, with a focus on high-stress areas under heavy haul.


Track Measurement and Data Analysis:

  • Use specialized track measurement tools (e.g., geometry trolleys, automated track inspection vehicles) to collect data on the condition of the rail line. Analyze the impact of the mixed sleeper types (steel and wooden) on track stability and performance.
  • Achieve track geometry standards for alignment and gauge in at least 98% of the rail line over a 12-month period.


Track Condition Monitoring:

  • Monitor the condition of both steel and wooden sleepers, particularly focusing on the transition areas between the two types. Identify areas prone to excessive wear, misalignment, or deformation due to heavy iron ore transport.
  • Detect and report all major geometry faults within 24 hours of identification and ensure corrective actions are taken promptly.


Stakeholder Collaboration:

  • Prepare comprehensive reports on track geometry inspections, measurements, and maintenance activities. Provide data-driven recommendations for maintenance and repairs.
  • Submit detailed reports within 48 hours post-inspection, ensuring accuracy and actionable insights for maintenance teams.


Collaborative Maintenance Coordination:

  • Work closely with the track maintenance team to prioritize and plan repairs based on track geometry findings. Advise on the use of appropriate materials (steel or wooden sleepers) for any sleeper replacements.
  • Achieve an 85% reduction in track-related service disruptions by collaborating effectively with the maintenance team.


Safety Compliance:

  • Ensure all work is conducted in strict adherence to rail safety standards and regulations, particularly those related to heavy-haul rail operations.
  • Maintain a record of zero safety incidents due to track geometry issues.


Continuous Improvement and Innovation:

  • Stay updated on the latest developments in track geometry technologies and implement new tools or techniques to enhance track inspection and maintenance processes.
  • Successfully implement at least one new inspection technology or methodology annually to improve track geometry monitoring.


The Requirements

  • A degree or diploma in civil engineering, rail engineering, or a related field is preferred, though extensive experience in track geometry inspection may substitute for formal qualifications.
  • Over 10 years of proven experience in locomotive planning, maintenance, or operations, with prior involvement in the rail industry.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in track geometry inspection, analysis, correction and alignment.
  • Experience with the operations and maintenance of tamping machines
  • Experience working on heavy-haul railways or lines with mixed sleeper types.
  • Proficiency in using track geometry tools and software for data collection, measurement, and reporting.
  • Strong understanding of track mechanics, particularly the impact of heavy iron ore loads on mixed sleeper tracks.
  • Advanced analytical skills to interpret track geometry data and provide actionable insights.
  • Demonstrated experience in generating comprehensive reports and making data-driven maintenance decisions.
  • Ability to diagnose track geometry issues and recommend suitable maintenance or corrective actions.
  • A proactive approach to identifying potential issues in high-stress track areas.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with maintenance teams and management.
  • Capability to clearly explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in surfacing equipment and interpreting input/output data from track geometry software and analysis tools.
