The Role

Kyndryl is seeking a Mainframe Application & Testing Engineer with strong programming and database knowledge, robust testing methodology, and excellent debugging skills. This role is essential for ensuring reliable, high-quality application delivery in mission-critical enterprise systems.

You will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and testing mainframe applications, supporting end-to-end software delivery, and ensuring compliance with quality and governance standards.

Responsibilities

• Develop and support mainframe applications using COBOL, PL/I, Assembler, Easytrieve, and REXX/CLIST.
  
• Write and debug JCL for batch processing and job automation.
  
• Perform database operations and validations using DB2, IMS DB, and IDMS.
  
• Test online applications running on CICS and IMS DC.
  
• Conduct unit, integration, regression, and performance testing.
  
• Support UAT cycles and assist users with test execution and defect resolution.
  
• Use debugging tools (Abend-AID, Xpediter, IBM Debug Tool) and data utilities (SORT, IDCAMS, IEBGENER).
  
• Manage source code and packages using Panvalet, ChangeMan, Endevor, and Git.
  
• Document test cases, results, and root cause analyses.
  
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth application delivery.
  

Required Skills and Experience

• Mainframe Technical Skills
  
• z/OS environment: Strong knowledge of TSO/ISPF, SDSF, datasets (PS, PDS, VSAM).
  
• JCL (Job Control Language): Writing, modifying, and debugging jobs.
  
• Programming languages: COBOL (most common for business apps); PL/I, Assembler, RPG, Easytrieve (depending on the system) and REXX/CLIST (for automation).
  
• Databases: DB2, IMS DB, IDMS — querying, data validation, and test data setup.
  
• Transaction monitors: CICS, IMS DC — testing online applications.
  
• Understanding of SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) and Agile/Waterfall models.
  
• Application analysis, enhancements, and defect fixing.
  
• Code review and integration with source management tools (Panvalet, ChangeMan, Endevor).
  
• Testing Skills
  
• Unit Testing: Verifying individual modules/programs.
  
• System Integration Testing (SIT): Validating interfaces and data flows across components.
  
• User Acceptance Testing (UAT) Support: Assisting users with test cycles.
  
• Regression Testing: Ensuring fixes/enhancements don't break existing functionality.
  
• Performance Testing: Analyzing job run-times, CICS response times, DB performance.
  
• Tools & Utilities
  
• File & Data utilities: SORT, IDCAMS, IEBGENER, IEBCOPY for test data creation.
  
• Debugging tools: IBM Debug Tool, Abend-AID, Xpediter, File-AID.
  
• Test management tools: HP ALM/QC, Jira, or equivalent.
  
• Version control/SCM tools: Panvalet, ChangeMan, Endevor, Git (in hybrid environments).
  
• Quality & Process Knowledge
  
• Defect Management & Root Cause Analysis.
  
• Familiarity with ITIL processes (Incident, Problem, Change Management).
  
• Compliance & audit standards (SOX, PCI, etc., depending on industry).
  
• Automation in testing: Using REXX, CLIST, or Python (in hybrid mainframe setups).
