Respiratory Therapist Job Description

This position plays a vital role in providing care and support to patients with respiratory issues. The Respiratory Therapist will work under medical supervision, adapting to specific areas of assignment and performing accordingly.

The key responsibilities include delivering quality care by integrating examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, and intervention to optimize patient outcomes. This involves administering inhalants and aerosolized medications, performing bronchial hygiene, operating mechanical ventilators, and delivering therapeutic gas administration.

Essential Functions
  • Delivers Quality Care: By optimizing patient independence, the Respiratory Therapist ensures that patients receive the best possible care and support.
  • Promotes Safe Working Environment: Complying with policies, procedures, rules, and regulations governing environment of care and patient safety is essential for this role.
  • Determines and/or Facilitates Discharge/Discontinuation of Services: Analyzing achievement of anticipated goals and expected outcomes, planning discharge/discontinuation, and providing appropriate home instruction or referral is crucial.
  • Records Patient Services: Documenting, dating, and authenticating respiratory therapy examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, and outcomes in accordance with facility and regulatory guidelines is necessary.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Therapy preferred
  • Graduate of a respiratory care program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care and/or a passing grade on the National Board for Respiratory Care entry level credentialing examination required
  • Registered or Certified Respiratory Therapy license required
  • BLS/CPR for a healthcare provider, per the American Heart Association required
