Construction Operations Manager for LATAM Regions

Position Overview:
This role is pivotal within the data center campus framework. The Construction Operations Manager for Latin America (LATAM) will play a key role in the Americas Construction team, focusing on guiding, mentoring, and developing our construction workforce dedicated to building data centers across Latin America.

The successful candidate will lead a dynamic and innovative team, tackling complex challenges associated with the construction of Amazon Data Centers. You will oversee a proactive team of professionals and the regional construction initiatives aimed at delivering data center capacity to support Amazon's operational needs and future expansion in Latin America.

Key Responsibilities:
The Construction Operations Manager will be tasked with:

  • Recruiting and nurturing new Construction Managers and Project Engineers while providing mentorship and leadership to a large construction management team.
  • Strategic oversight and tactical management of construction capacity delivery within the designated region.
  • Collaborating with Finance to guide the development and execution of capital budgets.
  • Coordinating with various departments involved in data center development and launch.
  • Establishing and managing performance metrics within the region.
  • Working alongside Business Development on land and facility acquisition.
  • Ensuring safety, cost efficiency, and quality standards of the data center deliverables.

Travel Requirements:
Willingness to travel internationally up to 50-75% of the time is essential.

Additional Responsibilities:
The role will also include:

  • Managing teams responsible for all phases of the data center construction lifecycle, from due diligence and budgeting to site selection, permitting, design review, and daily oversight.
  • Direct engagement with construction general contractors throughout various project phases.
  • Creating Requests for Proposal (RFPs) and Scopes of Work (SOWs).
  • Conducting negotiations with contractors and meticulously evaluating bids and proposals.
  • Performing financial analysis and reporting.
  • Overseeing construction project management initiatives aimed at enhancing the resilience of data centers.
  • Conducting constructability reviews of civil, structural, electrical, and mechanical designs.
  • Managing construction documentation, including submittal reviews, RFIs, change orders, and invoicing.
  • Ensuring total project quality through commissioning and integrated system testing.
  • Simultaneously managing multiple regions and projects, including new constructions and capital improvements.
  • Providing operational support for existing facilities by reviewing procedures and best practices.
  • Documenting and reporting key construction metrics to team members and management.
  • Leading troubleshooting and root-cause analysis efforts for equipment failures.
  • Traveling to construction sites across the Americas to support new construction and product delivery.

Qualifications:
Applicants should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Construction Management, along with experience in managing large-scale construction projects.
  • Experience in managing general contractors and vendors, including RFPs, bidding, change orders, and quality control.
  • Knowledge of relevant building codes and regulations.
  • Experience leading large contractor support teams.
  • Expertise in developing and maintaining project schedules.
  • Advanced proficiency in English.

Preferred Qualifications:
Additional desirable skills include:

  • Understanding of electrical engineering best practices.
  • Familiarity with mechanical engineering principles for cooling systems.
  • Experience in the design or construction of data centers.
  • Knowledge of large-scale technical operations.
